For those of us who have been, are and will be educators, we must do all we personally can to insure the safety and the well-being of our young people. And, if you are an adult, by your actions, you assume the role of educator for every young person you encounter.
What happens to one of us happens to all of us.

Forgive me. I have been on hiatus. Not a self-imposed hiatus. I moved. It was an interstate move.
Now, when you just move down the street or across town, you get to follow the van to your new home, watch the movers take your things off, set up your basics immediately (like your Internet) and you are off and running. When you do an interstate move, it is quite another thing. Your belongings don’t arrive when you do. In fact, they often arrive several days later. And, the very items that you need are the items that are packed away on a van that you won’t see in ten days!! But this post is not about the move.
What I have discovered in the course of setting up my new home is how to maximize my technology services to make them more cost-effective.
Did you know that with a wireless router that includes a USB port you can print wirelessly throughout your house — WITHOUT a wireless printer? Let me say that again. You do NOT have to spend money on a wireless printer. You can use the printer you have wirelessly, as long as it connects to the router via a USB cable.
Did you know that with the app, Fax Print Share Lite you can print from you iPad and iPhone? The link is to the right.
Did you know that instead of paying for enhanced cable/satellite services, if you just opt for the basic service and you have an Amazon Prime membership, you get access to FREE videos, in addition to free/loaner e-books for your Kindle? And of course, if you have an iPad or iPhone, you have access to free Kindle and Nook apps so you can read your books on all devices.
Did you know that with an Ooma VOIP basic subscription, you can ditch your landline phone and get free long distance service that works like a charm? Yes, free. (Taxes are about $3 per month). You can pay a one-time fee to port your current landline number.
This move has been interesting. Downsizing years of “treasures” into a smaller space has been an experience. But, from every experience you learn some tidbits that are worth passing on. Hopefully, these tech tidbits can help you.
I had the opportunity to take my niece to Disney World a few weeks ago. She had absolutely THE best time!! What made the trip so amazing for me was how it was engineered.
For some reason, I had never equated all of the points that I had accumulated on a certain charge card with travel. I received the periodic catalog that enumerated the lists of items that I could purchase with my points. However, I really was not aware of the advantages that points have for people like me who absolutely love to travel!!
With points on this particular card, I was able to fully pay for my airfare and my rental car. Since I own an exchangeable timeshare, that cost was already covered. In essence, I went to Orlando for free!! Just had to buy the Disney ticket!
In this economy, we need to be creative, folks. Opportunities abound. We just need to be aware of what is literally sitting within our reach.
In addition to that little bit of insight for me, I will share another piece of information that really hit me. I was not aware of how many people desire to rent instead of purchasing a property in this economy. If you own a property and you want to rent it, technology makes this so, so easy. Did you know that you can use a site like Postlets to advertise your property for free via the social media and get responses from all over the country from persons needing to relocate to your area? Once you have a tenant, you can create a website, put your rental documents out there AND put a PayPal button. Now your tenants can submit their rent there, instead of using snail mail, having you waiting for their rent check each month!
Technology … use it to make your life easier. And, use those points you accumulate on a charge card to have some fun!!
